US Box Office Results Feb 4-6, 2011

Horrible. Just Horrible. Total grosses of the top 10 this weekend barely hit $70M, the lowest Superbowl weekend in 5 years, the worst weekend since 2008. Dear John opened with $30M last year, but the number 1 film barely earned half of that. Let’s break it down:

1.) The Roommate – I was spot on with the numbers, I was just wrong with the position. The Roommate starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly had enough box office power to attract the female crowd who passed on the Superbowl weekend. This movie is a rip-off of Pretty White Ladies, it earned a B- Cinemascore so I guess it’ll drop big when four new movies come out to try and save the atrocious start of 2011.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 2, $10M

Actual Gross: $15.6M

Total Gross: $15.6M

2.) Sanctum – Never trust a movie executive produced by James Cameron. I guess people want him to direct rather than just have his name attached on the movie. This movie pushed 3D into new depths. 84% watched it in 3D, but the movie still didn’t crack 10 M. 3D sucks, unless you do it right.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 1, $15M

Actual Gross: $9.2M

Total Gross: $9.2M

3.) No Strings Attached – The movie has cracked $50M, a sign that this movie won’t be forgotten until the end of the year. Natalie Portman, I never expected you to star in 2 hot movies.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 4, $9M

Actual Gross: $8.4M

Total Gross: $51M

4.) The King’s Speech – It swapped places with No Strings on my prediction, but it’s still partly correct. The King’s Speech are now standing on their highest position in 11 weeks. Congratulations! Now, if only The Social Network could beat them at the Oscars…

Predicted Outcome: Rank 3, $9.5M

Actual Gross: $8.3M

Total Gross: $84.1M

5.) The Green Hornet – This movie has been relatively quiet since it’s release. It has earned over $87M in 4 modest weekends. It may not break even with its $120M budget, but that slow bleed week-to-week will help the studio earn at least some of their money back

Predicted Outcome: Rank 5, $8M

Actual Gross: $6.1M

Total Gross: $87.2M

6.) The Rite – This was just released last week and it dropped 5 spots to number 6. Damn, even an 11-week film beat this one. Good news, however, is that they earned their money back. Now, let’s forget about this movie.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 6, $7.2M

Actual Gross: $5.6M

Total Gross: $23.7M

7.) The Mechanic – I was a little too bullish on my predictions for all movies except the Roommate. The Mechanic also suffered a 50+% drop like the Rite, so I don’t know if we can consider this film a success for CBS Films

Predicted Outcome: Rank 7, $5.7M

Actual Gross: $5.4M

Total Gross: $20.1M

Too bad, I got 3 of 7 spots correct. Next week will be an even bigger problem. 4 new movies going head to head. Will Just Go With It, The Eagle, I Am Number Four and Gnomeo and Juliet beat last year’s record when Valentine’s Day, Percy Jackson and The Wolfman debuted?
