Box Office Results April 29-May 1, 2011 [final update]

Here are this week’s box office results courtesy of deadline and box office mojo

[update: Fast Five exceeds studio’s estimates]

Thanks to Fast Five, Hollywood may have completely forgotten about its box office woes. Total box office revenue for the week is an estimated $145M, more than 50% higher than last year! What’s more remarkable is that the top 12 movies did that even with 2 other movies opening with disappointing results.

Number One Movie Predicted Correctly: 1 Week in a Row

Number of Times I Nailed the Top 7: 1

Fast Five

1.) FAST FIVE – Here’s a fun fact: this is the third straight weekend in which the number one movie is based on Rio De Janeiro. The only difference? This movie made twice more money in its first weekend than Rio did in two weeks. Fast Five now has the biggest opening weekend ever for the month of April, and it will no doubt put some smiles in the faces of the guys from Universal.

[update: It looks like F5 earned much higher than the estimated $83.6M]

Predicted Outcome: Rank 1, $75.6M

Actual Gross: $86.2M

Total Gross: $86.2M

2.) Rio – On the other hand, the former number one movie is still holding up well, staying in second place after three weeks. This film will become only the fourth movie to reach $100M for the year. It’s not the first animated movie though, as Rango has already taken that spot.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 2, $17.2M

Actual Gross: $14.8M

Total Gross: $104.0M

3.) Madea’s Big Happy Family – Surprise, surprise! What did I tell you? This movie crashed and burned! Well, all Madea movies falter in its second outing, so I’m not actually shocked to see this result.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 3, $11.0M

Actual Gross: $9.9M

Total Gross: $41.0M

4.) Water For Elephants – And there goes my streak. I should’ve followed my instincts when I thought that none of the other new movies this week will have any success. This movie however, isn’t affected by the new movies at all. A 42% drop isn’t that bad, but it’s not great either.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 5, $9.5M

Actual Gross: $9.3M

Total Gross: $32.4M

5.) PROM – Hey, what the hell happened to Hoodwinked Too!? Regardless, you could still say that this one tanked at the box office. And to think this week is the biggest one yet for the year, right?

Predicted Outcome: Rank 6, $9.0M

Actual Gross: $4.7M

Total Gross: $4.7M

6.) HOODWINKED TOO! HOOD VS. EVIL 3D – Oh, here it is! I have some ideas as to why this movie also bombed. Either, 1.) The Title 2.) The first movie sucked 3.) The inclusion of 3D to an unknown movie or 4.) All of the above. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure that the answer is number 4. P.S. It earned less than 1/3 of the original’s opening weekend.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 4, $10.5M

Actual Gross: $4.1M

Total Gross: $4.1M

7.) Soul Surfer – My prediction for seventh place was Hop but it ended up at ninth. Oh well. Everybody has flaws.

Predicted Outcome: UNRANKED

Actual Gross: $3.3M

Total Gross: $33.7M

Total Score: 3 out of 7, with a variance of $4.0428M per prediction.
