Box Office Predictions for June 17-19, 2011

Will Green Lantern sizzle or fizzle? This movie is one of the “risky” superhero movies that rely on its fanbase rather than its mainstream audience. Ultimately, I sense a result similar to Watchmen, although in a more positive light.

Last Week’s Box Office Mojo Derby Rank: 358 (down 41 spots from last week) with 82.414% Accuracy (up 3.383%)

Green Lantern

1.) GREEN LANTERN – $50.0M – This one is poised to earn as much as X-Men: First Class’ opening weekend plus the 3D surcharge. But trust me, I would’ve gone waaaay lower because I felt that the trailers were lacking anything unique and early reviews say that this one is among the worst superhero movies made (22% on RT). But then again, its fanbase will probably help this one out at least in its opening weekend. I’m pretty sure It’ll crash next weekend though.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

2.) MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS – $21.8M – This would’ve been a relatively “okay” start if it were 3 years ago, but at this day and age, $20M isn’t that much. Too bad for Jim Carrey, the actor which I consider the funniest comedian in the big screen. It was also kinda buried under the slew of big blockbuster sequels in the past few months.

3.) Super 8 – $20.0M – This could jump to 2nd place if interested people will visit this movie this week and if people will have less interest in Mr. Popper than studios expected.

4.) X-Men: First Class – $12.5M – Out of the past 4 movies, X-Men Origins: Wolverine had the smallest second week drop. Pretty interesting, huh?

5.) Kung Fu Panda 2 – $10.8M – I haven’t watched this yet and I probably won’t see it in theaters. I’ll have 5 more opportunities anyway, if those 5 sequels are still happening.

6.) The Hangover Part II – $10.3M – 6 movies will earn more than $10M this week, but this weekend won’t beat the phenomenal record of 2010, when Toy Story 3 was launched into the big screen.

7.) Bridesmaids – $7.7M – Will edge out Pirates Of The Caribbean this week, overtaking yet another blockbuster in the top 10 after Thor and Fast Five.
