Box Office Results June 24-26, 2011 (FINAL)

Pixar may have suffered its first ever “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but families’ first impression of their latest movie seems solid yet again. Factor out the excess 3D baggage, looks like Cars 2 will match the attendance of its predecessor in its opening weekend!

{update: The results are in, and it turns out I nailed the top 7! Woohoo!}

Here are the early estimates courtesy of deadline. Final results will be taken from boxofficemojo. Final results on MONDAY

Number One Movie Predicted Correctly: 4 Weeks in a Row

Number of Times I Nailed the Top 7: 4

1.) CARS 2 – This didn’t break any records but it will definitely be the biggest money-maker for Pixar. Revenue for toys are already expected to hit $10B (for the record, Toy Story earned $2.6B). They’re in a good position right now. And besides, people won’t avoid Pixar movies in the future just because of one “bad” movie, right?

Predicted Outcome: Rank 1, $69.8M

Actual Gross: $66.1M

Total Gross: $66.1M

2.) BAD TEACHER – Looks like creativity paid off for whoever came up with the movie’s concept. Female leads in R-rated movies seem to be the trend nowadays as Bridesmaids has already raked in $145M and this one shot well above expectations, even mine!

Predicted Outcome: Rank 2, $25.0M

Actual Gross: $31.6M

Total Gross: $31.6M

3.) Green Lantern – Yowch! Even my guess was a little higher than the actual result. Green Lantern suffered a HUGE 66% drop in its second weekend. International grosses aren’t going well either. Oh well, at least we won’t have to endure another unnecessary sequel.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 3, $20.2M

Actual Gross: $18.0M

Total Gross: $88.9M

4.) Super 8 – This one had the lowest week-to-week drop in the top 7, defeating the movie below by a very small margin.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 4, $13.1M

Actual Gross: $12.0M

Total Gross: $95.2M

5.) Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Everyone’s site I go keeps telling me that Mr. Popper will hold well for its 2nd week. Unfortunately, I was the only one that didn’t listen. Way to go, instinct!

Predicted Outcome: Rank 5, $9.7M

Actual Gross: $10.1M

Total Gross: $31.2M

6.) X-Men: First Class – $133M in 4 weeks ain’t that bad, but it’s not enough to ensure a sequel. Sigh.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 6, $6.1M

Actual Gross: $6.7M

Total Gross: $132.8M

7.) The Hangover Part II – It’s tied with Bridesmaids for 7th place. This one is at Week 5 and earned $100M in its first 5 days. The latter is in its 7th week and had a $30M opening weekend. Word-of-mouth has its effects.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 7, $5.5M

Actual Gross: $5.8M

Total Gross: $243.6M

TOTAL SCORE: 7 out of 7 (nailed it!), with a variance of $2.12857M per prediction.
