Box Office Results: September 2-5, 2011

And we have a three-peat! The Help didn’t even need some help in warding off the newcomers as it becomes the first movie of the year to stay at the top spot three weeks in a row!

Box office totals were miserable this week. The top 12 managed to earn only $105.2M for the 4-day weekend, somewhat lower than the average holiday totals. The Help was the only film to cross $10M after three days. But enough of that, let’s take a closer look at the top 7 shall we?

Number One Movie Predicted Correctly: 4 Weeks in a Row

Number of Times I Nailed the Top 7: 5

1.) The Help – This movie has the highest grossing 4th weekend of the year, even outliving the final Harry Potter finale and Transformers 3. It has earned over $123M so far and thanks to its solid record and it finally got me curious about the movie. I checked the trailer and looked pretty solid. Maybe I’ll see it in the theater…just maybe.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 1, $13.1M

Actual Gross: $19.0M

Total Gross: $123.9M

2.) THE DEBT – Booyah! I knew The Debt would edge out the two new horror flicks out this week. Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington stars in this thriller and I’m very glad I trusted my instincts with this one.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 2, $11.2M

Actual Gross: $12.5M

Total Gross: $12.5M

3.) APOLLO 18 – Everybody thought that after the success of the past two Paranormal Activity films, all new movies in the found footage genre would be successful, at least in the short-run. I guess this one proved us wrong.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 3, $11.1M

Actual Gross: $10.7M

Total Gross: $10.7M

4.) SHARK NIGHT 3D – Not even 3D could help this one recoup its hefty $28M budget. Did they spend all those money making 3D water droplets?

Predicted Outcome: Rank 1, $10.0M

Actual Gross: $10.3M

Total Gross: $10.3M

5.) Rise of the Planet of the Apes – I didn’t expect another film to cross $10M this week. And thanks to this movie my chances of nailing the top 7 once again vanished. Good thing its a good movie though, I can forgive it.

Predicted Outcome: Rank 6, $6.3M

Actual Gross: $10.2M

Total Gross: $162.5M

6.) Columbiana – Probably the biggest shocker of the week is Zoe Saldana’s actioner which only dropped 10% this week, an outstanding feat given that critics panned it and three new movies came out this week. Maybe some people realized that something mediocre is better than a rip-off

Predicted Outcome: Rank 5, $6.8M

Actual Gross: $9.4M

Total Gross: $23.9M

7.) Our Idiot Brother – Here’s a trivia for ya’: Columbiana has grossed $23M, while The Help has already earned exactly $100M more than that. Just saying this because I need to fill this part up ‘coz I don’t have anything to say about Our Idiot Brother.

Predicted Outcome: UNRANKED, $4.2M

Actual Gross: $7.0M

Total Gross: $17.8M

TOTAL SCORE: 4 out of 7, with a variance of $2.45714M per prediction
